McCartan: We're not safe yet

Shay McCartan does not think his late equaliser against York has guaranteed Accrington's safety and is targeting at least one more win.

The forward came off the bench to net his first goal for the club at Bootham Crescent which secured a 1-1 draw at in-form York and moved Stanley to the fabled 50-point mark. However, reaching such a target has not assured James Beattie's side of safety, according to McCartan, who is aware that the gap between them and the drop zone is only four points with a quartet of games remaining. "I think we need maybe one more win," he said when speaking to the club's official website. "We've put ourselves in good stead for staying up." That Accrington are even in that position is remarkable given rookie manager Beattie had to wait until October 22 for their first victory, their 13th League Two game of the season. "We always say 'what if we didn't have that bad start? Where would we be in the table?' You never know," added McCartan. "But that's football. We did well to get out of that 12 games where we didn't win but we've done a lot since then." McCartan was a first-team regular in that rotten run of form in the season's opening stages and then found himself on the periphery. He was, therefore, delighted to score a goal which could have a crucial impact on Stanley's fortunes this term. "It's been a hard six months or so," the teenager admitted. "I haven't been playing. I was playing at the start of the season and then went off the boil, sort of lost confidence, but hopefully that will get me back on track."
