Boyd: Posh have learned

Peterborough striker George Boyd has some "unfinished business" in the Championship and has no doubts they are good enough to stay there.

A three-goal blitz in seven second-half minutes of their League One play-off final swept Posh back into the second tier at the first attempt and condemned Huddersfield to their first defeat in 28 league matches. Peterborough were forced to batten down the hatches after half-time, but stunned the Yorkshiremen with quickfire goals from defender Tommy Rowe, striker Craig Mackail-Smith - his 35th of the season - and skipper Grant McCann in the 78th, 80th and 85th minutes to secure their third promotion in four campaigns. Boyd said: "We've learned a lot of things since last season in the Championship. We've improved and we won't make the same mistakes again. "I'm sure the gaffer will be bringing in some more players with experience of playing at that level. It hurt to go straight back down last time, but we wanted another shot at it. We had some unfinished business. "We feel we're good enough to stay there. We'll give a good account of ourselves this time." Huddersfield, who finished eight points better off than Posh, had not tasted defeat since going down 4-1 at Southampton in late December, but Boyd said the Cambridgeshire side, who scored 106 goals during the regular season, had been confident of victory. The 25-year-old added: "Huddersfield have done really well this season, but you can have all the games in the world unbeaten - this was a one-off and we knew we could win it. "We've earned it. Since the gaffer's come in we've played some great football and I think it showed on the big stage. We deserved to go up. "We've got goals all over the team. Obviously Mackail-Smith scored again and he was brilliant, but we literally can score goals from anywhere. "Grant then popped up with an unbelievable free-kick and it's such a fantastic feeling - 3-0 up with five minutes to go, knowing that you're going to be in the Championship. Brilliant." Posh's three-pronged strikeforce of Boyd, Mackail-Smith and Lee Tomlin carried the greater threat. Tomlin, playing non-league football with Rushden & Diamonds nine months ago, was lost for words after the final whistle. He said: "I can't really say anything. This is just unbelievable, for me to do this. To be heading for the Championship I would never have expected it. Not in a million years - never." The 22-year-old spared a thought for Lee Clark's Huddersfield, saying: "You've got to feel sorry for them. It's hard for them, but they're a good team. They'll definitely bounce back, but there's got to be a loser on the day and thankfully it ain't us." Huddersfield's players were inconsolable and experienced defender Gary Naysmith felt for the supporters. He said: "We've fallen at the final hurdle and, as much as the players and the management, I feel sorry for the fans. With the support we've had this season, we deserved to be in the Championship. To get nearly 35,000 is unheard of for Huddersfield. "I also feel for people like [defender] Lee Peltier and [injured goalkeeper] Alex Smithies because they are more than good enough to be playing in the Championship next season. "Potentially, they are Premier League players in a couple of years so for them to have to spend another year in League One - with all respect - is a disappointment."
