Nike VR Pro Combo

These new clubs are Nike's solution for good golfers choosing between blades and cavities.

Not for the feint hearted, or the weak fingered, the Nike VR Pro Combo irons are the new solution for those experienced golfers looking to make a step up in their game. The idea behind Nike's new iron set is for those golfers good enough to use blades but possibly not quite consistent enough with the long irons as they would like. The VR Combo iron are, as the name suggests, a combination of blades and cavity irons, with the long irons three and four being cavity backs, while five-seven are 'split' and similar to the Nike VR Split set of irons. Short irons are blades to give more feel for your approach shots, with the overall package giving golfers more confidence in their long irons whilst giving them optimum feel in the short game - in essence the best of both worlds! There's no doubting the quality of these premium Tour-level irons, which are made from 1025 Forged Carbon Steel and Dynamic Gold Steel true temper shafts, while new X3X high-frequency grooves are closer together and deeper than usual to offer more control. Saying all this, these clubs are not aimed for and are not really suited for the mid to high handicappers, as whilst they look fantastic the forgiveness is not there and players such as myself look down in dread at what resembles a long iron only much, much smaller. Short irons are hittable, and do seem to offer more distance when connecting properly, but it takes a much better player to get the best out of these clubs, which is why we allowed two handicapper Dave Keywood to get his mitts on them.

When the Nike VR Pro Combo's landed on my desk it was safe to say I was chomping at the bit to take them out and have a go. I have used Nike VR Splits for the past two years which I adore. They were an easy transition from my Titleist 690.CB's as they look very similar. I have always struggled with longer irons and always wanted a better look from shorter irons. The 3 & 4 irons are basically cavity backs which give you so much more confidence then looking down at a bladed long iron, the 5, 6, & 7 irons are very similar to the Nike VR Splits in that they aren't quite a blade and not quite a cavity back. Again these are perfect for players who don't quite find the middle of the club on every shot with longer irons. You get more forgiveness and extra distance from this. This leaves a bladed 8, 9 & PW for maximum feel and look. My verdict on the clubs are that they are for players who are good at striking a golf ball. I wouldn't like to set a specific handicap as I know players off around 16-18 handicap who hit a fantastic ball but who struggle around the greens. If you are a single figure golfer and looking for a new set of irons, I would seriously consider taking a look and trying these irons out. They say golf is a game of confidence and I have found that these irons certainly bring out more in my game.
