Solheim Cup: Three key members for Team USA

Lexi Thompson of the United States Solheim Cup team

We take a look at three players who are likely to play a key role for the United States in the Solheim Cup at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club this week.

World No 2 Lexi Thompson was given the honour of representing the United States in the top singles match at the 2015 Solheim Cup and the 22-year-old looks set to lead the way once again for Juli Inkster's side.

Thompson has been in excellent form this year with eight top 10s to her name, although she has only notched one victory - the Kingsmill Championship in May - after losing out in three play-offs.

She made her Solheim Cup debut in 2013 at the age of 18 but was narrowly beaten in both her fourball appearances when she was paired with experienced duo Stacy Lewis and Paula Creamer.

Europe bossed the singles as they wrapped up an 18-10 victory but Thompson was the USA's star performer, leading for her entire match against Germany's Caroline Masson to prevail 4&3.

Thompson was back in the United States team at St Leon-Rot in 2015 and played a key role as she remained unbeaten.

She formed a formidable partnership with Cristie Kerr in Germany as they secured two wins and a half in their three appearances on Friday and Saturday.

Thompson had to settle for another half point against Spain's Carlota Ciganda in the first singles match, but eight subsequent wins saw the visitors complete a superb comeback to prevail by a point.

Kerr could well renew her partnership with Thompson at Des Moines as the 39-year-old will feature in the United States line-up for an eighth time.

The world No 14 made her debut back in 2002 and has an overall record of 15 wins, 14 defeats and five halves.

She improved that record with a fine performance at St Leon-Rot last time when she was another of the American team to remain unbeaten thanks to her pairing with Thompson.

Kerr then claimed a notable scalp in the singles in the crucial 10th match as she halted the winning streak of Europe's taliswoman Charley Hull with a 3&2 success.

Kerr opened her account on the LPGA Tour in 2002 and she has since gone on to capture another 18 titles, including two majors, with the last of those coming at the Lotte Championship in April.

She could only manage a tie for 59th place in the Women's British Open earlier this month but is sure to be a formidable opponent for the European team once again.

The same can be said of Michelle Wie who will be making her fourth Solheim Cup appearance and relishes the competition.

The world No 29 made her debut as a rookie and captain's pick in 2009 and won three-and-a-half points as the United States triumphed 16-12 for their third successive win.

Wie could only manage one point as the Americans lost their grip on the trophy in 2011 and then doubled that tally in a losing cause in 2013.

The last of Wie's four LPGA Tour victories came at the US Women's Open in 2014 but she was able to retain her place in the USA team at St Leon-Rot in 2015 when she lost in both her foursomes appearances.

However, she more than played her part in the visitors' singles comeback as she demolished Sweden's Caroline Hedwall 6&4 for the most emphatic win of the afternoon.

Wie will be hoping for more of the same this week and she is one of the most in-form players on the home team with some excellent performances in recent months, including a joint-third finish in the Women's British Open.
