Tiger Woods is refusing to give up on Quicken Loans National victory, despite falling further adrift of the lead during his third round.
The former world No 1 mixed six birdies with four bogeys during an up-and-down day at TPC Potomac, with a two-under 68 seeing slip six strokes back from 54-hole joint-leaders Abraham Ancer and Francesco Molinari.
Woods came into the weekend four off the pace but briefly got within one of the lead after four consecutive birdies on his front nine, with the 42-year-old still hopeful of a similar run during the final round.
"If it stays dry and they don't put too much water on it (the golf course), then I think I have a shot of coming back and winning this golf tournament," Woods told Sky Sports.
"If they soften it up to avoid losing the greens, then it might be a different story as it will be soft and everyone will be making birdies.
"The four bogeys were not what I needed. I figured I needed to get to at least 10 (under) today to be in a good spot. I've got a lot of work to do tomorrow."
Woods bogeyed his opening hole and converted a 10-footer to save par at the third, before surging up the leaderboard by following a birdie at the fourth with a close-range gain at the next.
Further gains over the next two holes saw Woods threaten the lead, before cancelling out a blemish at the eighth by holing a 20-footer at the ninth to reach the turn in 32.
Missed birdie opportunities on the first two holes of Woods' back nine were followed by a blemish at the 13th, with the tournament host holing a six-foot gain at the 16th but then failing to get up-and-down from a bunker to save par at the last.
