Swede defies gusty conditions - and a bad back - with seven-under 66

Fredrik Andersson Hed has joined halfway co-leader Simon Wakefield atop the Johnnie Walker Championship leaderboard after producing a brilliant third-round charge at Gleneagles. Starting the day in 33rd place, the 35-year-old defied another gusty day to shoot a seven-under-par round of 66, one which places him alongside Wakefield on nine under. The latter produced more sedate golf on Saturday, with Wakefield returning a level-par 73 - including a chip in at the last hole. Andersson Hed and Wakefield hold a one-stroke lead heading into the final round, with Marc Warren leading the chase after also shooting a 73. But Thomas Levet, who had shared the halfway lead with Wakefield, heads into the final round in a four-way tie for seventh after slipping to a three-over 76.

Back spasms

Andersson Hed, who, like Wakefield, has never won on the European Tour, later claimed his round was probably the best of his career when conditions were taken into consideration. He also thought himself lucky to be in the field at all, after suffering back spasms while exercising at home earlier in the week. "I wasn't sure I'd be able to play but flew home and got some great help from the physio guys on Tour," he said. "I didn't hit a single practice shot on Wednesday, just a few putts." Having just holed a 50-foot putt for his sixth birdie of the day on the 17th, a strong gust of wind twice moved his ball as he removed his marker on the final green. However, the match referee ruled that the wind caused the movement rather than the player.
Levet moves back
Meanwhile, Frenchman Levet had held a two-shot lead after taking a birdie at the third - a hole which playing partner Wakefield could only double bogey. But Levet could not sustain such momentum and his slide in form was amply reflected by a double bogey 7 at the 16th. Warren similarly had an up-and-down round, scoring double bogeys at both the fourth and fifth holes. But the Scot recovered well to play the remaining holes in four under. Lee Westwood lies joint fourth on seven under after shooting his second successive 69, while Colin Montgomerie remains a contender on five under after carding a 71. Defending champion Paul Casey lies one stroke further back after shooting a 73, but fellow Ryder Cup player Darren Clarke struggled to a 76 for a one-over total.
