Bubba Watson uses the toe-end of his putter on the edge of the 10th green at the 98th PGA Championship at Baltusrol

Bubba Watson is well known for his inventive play on the golf course and exhibited it once again at the PGA Championship.

Faced with a chip from the fringe on the 10th green at Baltusrol, Watson was not interested in reaching for the pitching wedge.

Instead, he grabbed his putter and proceeded to bump and run the ball to within two feet of the pin using its toe-end.

Watson signed for a one-over-par 71 at the end of the first round for a share of 55th place.

Jimmy Walker leads the field after posting a five-under-par 65 and his score on day one and his score was not matched throughout the remainder of the round as conditions became tougher for the afternoon starters.

The weather took its toll on Dustin Johnson, who registered a seven-over-par 77, while Rory McIlroy also faces a battle to make the cut after an opening 74.

McIlroy needed 35 putts to get round Baltusrol in stifling heat, and said: "I think first and foremost, I have to play a good round to get into the weekend - that's the first objective, and then go from there."
