The South African birdied the 17th - his eighth hole of the day - to edge ahead of overnight leader Sergio Garcia just before tournament officials halted play at 2.25pm local time (10.25am GMT).

More than half of the field were unable to complete their rounds before the winds strengthened and play was suspended, while Tiger Woods withdrew before he was due to tee off because of a back injury.

Bad weather had always been forecast and the greens were not cut or rolled prior to the second round as a result, with several trees blown over by gusts in excess of 35mph at Emirates Golf Club.

Coetzee birdied three of his opening four holes to open up a two-shot cushion over the Spaniard, before halving his advantage with a blemish at the 14th.

As Garcia parred the fifth to stay at eight under for the tournament, Coetzee rolled in a six-foot birdie at the 17th to go three under for the day and move top of the leaderboard.
