Bernd Wiesberger reels off nine straight birdies at the Maybank Championship

Bernd Wiesberger roared into the halfway lead at the Maybank Championship in Malaysia after an astonishing run of nine consecutive birdies on day two.

Wiesberger had opened with a solid three-under 69 at Saujana and made a quiet start to his second round, being level par through six holes after offsetting a birdie at the third with a bogey at the next.

But another birdie at seven ignited his charge up the leaderboard, and eight further birdie putts in a row followed before his run came to an end with a par at 16 - a hole he birdied on the first day!

Unfortunately for the Austrian, he was denied the European Tour record for the most consecutive birdies as preferred lies were in operation due to the damp conditions in Kuala Lumpur.

Wiesberger went on to bogey the 17th before making his 11th birdie of the day at the last to cap a 63, leaving him one ahead of Masters champion Danny Willett heading into the weekend.
