Jordan Spieth and Jason Day roar into contention in Pebble Beach Pro Am

Jordan Spieth claimed a share of the lead as Jason Day also charged into contention on day two of the weather-hit AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am.

The strong winds and heavy rain which curtailed the opening round relented on Friday, although professionals and celebrities had to contend with persistent fog which forced play to again be suspended ahead of schedule.

Spieth was one of only 32 of the 154 remaining competitors who managed to complete their second rounds, and the two-time major champion found himself as the clubhouse leader after returning a seven-under 65 at Spyglass Hill.

The 23-year-old parred the final two holes at Monterey Peninsula early on to complete an opening 68 before making the short trip to Spyglass, where he started on the back nine and made four birdies in seven holes.

Spieth picked up further shots at the second, fourth and seventh before a wayward approach to the next cost him his only bogey of the day, but he responded with another birdie at his final hole to close on 10 under par.

Derek Fathauer is also 10 under with one hole to complete when he returns to Pebble Beach in the morning, and he would have been reluctant to walk off having rolled in eight birdie putts while keeping a blemish off his card.

Day was also on a superb run as he followed three birdies over the first seven holes at Spyglass Hill with four in a row from the ninth before the klaxon sounded to bring the players in.

The world No 1 surged to nine under with six holes of his second round remaining, while American Ryder Cup star Patrick Reed was a further two shots back following an excellent day at Monterey Peninsula.

Reed made seven birdies against just one mistake and will resume on the par-three ninth - his last - on Saturday morning, while Seung-Yul Noh is alongside Reed on seven under with five holes to complete at Pebble Beach.

Two-time champion Brandt Snedeker again showed his prowess in poor weather as he moved to five under after 14 solid holes at Spyglass Hill, where US Open holder Dustin Johnson returned an entertaining 69 featuring six birdies and three bogeys.

Johnson moved to four under and will have extra practice time before taking on Pebble Beach, where Farmers Insurance Open champion Jon Rahm produced a stunning run of six consecutive birdies on the front nine.

But the Spaniard was unable to maintain his form and failed to get another birdie putt to drop while carding a lone bogey at the 14th, settling for a 67 which left him alongside Johnson at four under.

Irish duo Shane Lowry (MP) and Seamus Power (PB) are well placed on three under with eight and six holes remaining respectively, but fan favourite Phil Mickelson offset three birdies with as many bogeys in a disappointing 72 at Spyglass Hill.
