Justin Thomas produces an amazing pitch-in for an unlikely birdie during the first round of the WGC-Mexico Championship

Justin Thomas produced one of the most ingenious shots of the golfing year so far to card the unlikeliest of birdies on day one of the WGC-Mexico Championship.

Thomas, who won the first two PGA Tour events of 2017 in Hawaii and also carded a magical 59, looked in danger of running up a big number at the fourth hole when he carved his drive into the trees on the right.

The young American could only advance his ball 50 yards and left it in the rough, over 100 yards from the pin with overhanging branches preventing him from playing a lofted pitch with a wedge.

Thomas opted to take a straighter-faced iron to keep his ball below the tree limbs, although that brought the front-right bunker into play if he went directly at the flagstick.

But he hit a low fade which pitched in the rough and hopped onto the green before rolling straight into the cup for one of the most remarkable birdie-threes you will see this season.
