Hideto Tanihara had already enjoyed a memorable week at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, but he chalked up another highlight with a stunning hole-in-one on the final day.
The Japanese player has been the surprise package of the tournament from the moment he cruised to victory over Jordan Spieth in the opening round of group stage matches, and he saw off Englishmen Paul Casey and Ross Fisher to earn a shot at world No 1 Dustin Johnson in the semi-finals.
Tanihara hit back from three down to push Johnson to the final hole, but the top seed came up with a crucial birdie at the 17th before salvaging a clutch par at the last to record a one-up win.
The 54th seed headed out for the third/fourth play-off against Bill Haas, and he reduced the par-three seventh to just one swing of a club to post only the fourth hole-in-one in the tournament's history.
Tanihara sent an eight-iron right on line at the 201-yard hole, and his ball pitched 50 feet short of the target before running up the slope onto the top plateau and rolling straight into the middle of the cup to prompt cheers which echoed around the Austin Country Club.
