Kevin Pietersen joined Robert Lee and Simon Holmes in the golf studio to pay tribute to the innovations and entertainment at the GolfSixes

Kevin Pietersen paid a glowing tribute to the players and fans at the GolfSixes as he reflected on an "entertaining" event full of innovation and insight.

Pietersen was a special guest on the commentary team during the opening day at Centurion Golf Club, and he joined Robert Lee and Simon Holmes in the studio on Sunday evening after wrapping up coverage of England's final one-day international against Ireland at Lord's.

The self-confessed "golf nut" admits he plays more golf than cricket these days, and he was delighted with the success of the inaugural six-hole, greensomes match play event that was won by the young Denmark team of Thorbjorn Olesen and Lucas Bjerregaard.

The former England batsman, a tidy six-handicapper on the golf course, was intrigued and educated by the insight given by the players during the numerous on-course interviews during matches, drawing comparisons with being mic'd up in Twenty20 games.

"The players were nothing short of brilliant, absolutely magnificent," he said. "The way they engaged with the fans, giving us that valuable insight into their strategy, it was great to watch. Credit to the European Tour for being innovative and creative."
