The Welshman holed a 40-footer at the par-three 18th to close a two-under 70 at the Forest of Arden Marriott Hotel & CC, which was enough for victory when McGinley posted a final-hole bogey.

McGinley shared second spot with overnight leader Clark Dennis, with Sweden's Jarmo Sandelin a further two strokes back in fourth and Philip Golding tied for fifth alongside Peter Fowler.

"The thing with tough conditions is there aren't going to be scores like 64s or 65 out there," Dodd said. "Level par is usually a good score and that's what I had in mind today.

"The field was great this week, and to come out on top is a great achievement for me."

Dennis lost his overnight advantage with four bogeys on his front nine, as McGinley cancelled out an opening-hole blemish with gains at the fifth and seventh to move top of the leaderboard.

McGinley dropped shots at the 11th and 13th but bounced back to post a birdie-two at the 15th, which saw the Irishman reclaim his lead when Dodd bogeyed the same hole.

After Dodd holed his birdie from the fringe at the 18th to set the clubhouse target at two under, McGinley struck his tee shot short of the green and missed his putt for par.

Back-to-back gains from the 16th saw Dennis move within one of the lead heading to the last, where he missed a 15-foot birdie putt in his attempt to force a play-off.
