Lexi Thompson missed a sitter as Ariya Jutanugarn won the CME Group Tour Championship

Thailand's Ariya Jutanugarn triumphed in the CME Group Tour Championship thanks to two late birdies and a missed short putt by Lexi Thompson.

American Thompson looked set for glory at the Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida with a one-shot lead going onto the 18th green.

But a missed a two-foot par putt dropped her into a three-way tie and set up Jutanugarn the chance to grab the headlines.

The 21-year-old world No 9, who started the day among the quartet holding the lead, stayed cool to sink an 18-foot birdie putt for a five-under 67 and a one-shot victory.

Thompson and compatriot Jessica Korda shared second, just one stroke adrift, with Sweden's Pernilla Lindberg and South Korean Ji Eun-Hee tied for fourth a shot further back.

Thompson needed to win to secure the LPGA Tour player of the year award. Her consolation was winning the $1m bonus for the CME Race to the Globe and the Vare Trophy for the lowest scoring average.

"It is very special," Thompson said. "It has just been an incredible week."
