Martin Laird made a spectacular move up the leaderboard with one long swing of the putter as he made an unlikely eagle midway through his third round of the Valero Texas Open.
Laird had been struggling to make much happen on day three in San Antonio as he bogeyed the opening hole and put together a run of six pars before finding something special on the eighth green.
The big-hitting Scot, who held off Rory McIlroy to win his third PGA Tour title here five years ago, managed to find the front of the green in two at the monster 602-yard par-five, although he left himself a difficult two-putt for birdie.
With 83 feet between his ball and the cup, not to mention a steep slope up to the back tier, Laird would have been happy to get down in two as he lined up his putt in an attempt to gauge the pace.
But after he sent the putt on its way, it soon became apparent that he had judged the speed to perfection, and so was the line as his ball dropped straight into the hole for an eagle which lifted Laird to seven under and firmly in contention.
