Colin Montgomerie powered to a three-shot victory at the inaugural Shipco Masters as Dame Laura Davies finished in a respectable tie for 44th in her historic appearance in Denmark.

Montgomerie came into the week without a win on the Staysure Tour since 2015, but he overturned a four-shot deficit to claim a convincing win after carding a five-under 67 on the final day at Simon's Golf Club in Kvistgard.

The Ryder Cup legend put the pressure on overnight leader Peter Baker with two birdies followed by an eagle at the seventh, although he then slipped back to eight under with a bogey at the ninth.

But Montgomerie eliminated the mistakes after the turn and birdied both the 11th and 12th for the second day running before giving himself a comfortable buffer over the chasing pack with another gain at the 17th.

A solid par at the last capped his second-straight 67, while English duo Paul Eales (71) and Barry Lane (72) shared second place ahead of the fast-finishing pair of Paul McGinley and James Kingston, who both closed with 67s.

"It feels superb, absolutely superb," said Montgomerie. "It means as much as any of the wins on the European Tour or wherever it might be. There were 60 guys starting and you've ended up at the top of the pack, so the self-esteem goes through the roof when you win. It has given me a lot of confidence to go forward now for the rest of the year.

"I needed something in the mid-60s, and I played for a five at the last knowing I was three ahead. Any time you score 67 it can't be that bad, you can't be playing on the Tour badly, so two 67s was good. I needed that after a disappointing first round 71.

"I knew I had to get out of the blocks early. I had to put pressure on Peter Baker and Barry Lane, known winners. I had to put pressure on them early on and I managed to do that and then sustained it."

Davies, meanwhile, had 14 players below her on the leaderboard at the close, including Jose Maria Olazabal and Costantino Rocca, as she fired a 75 to finish on eight-over par.

The 54-year-old, the first woman to play on the Staysure Tour, recovered from a poor start with three straight birdies from the sixth, although she bogeyed three of the last four holes to finish in a tie for 44th place.
