World No.1 rattles off sixth successive title

Tiger Woods left it late before snatching the Arnold Palmer Invitational title at Bay Hill. The world No.1 - who has now won six tournaments on the bounce following four PGA Tour titles and the European Tour's Dubai Desert Classic - had reached the 18th in a share of the lead with Bart Bryant. However he holed a 24ft birdie on the the final hole to secure a dramatic victory - and deny Bryant his first title since 2005. "It's just like when I beat Phil (Mickelson) here a few years ago, only this time it was a bit deeper in the green," Woods said of his winning putt. "I had to at least make par to get in a play-off and lo and behold I made birdie. That's pretty good." Bryant had fought all the way, having started the final round in a share of the lead with Woods, Vijay Singh and Sean O'Hair.

Pressure

While Singh and O'Hair failed to keep up the pressure, Bryant kept plugging away - and even when Woods reached the turn one-shot clear, he refused to give up. And having finished the day on three-under for a nine-under total of 271, he looked quietly confident. However, Woods timed his finish to perfection - finishing on four-under for the day and on 270. "I played the way I felt I had to down the stretch, getting pars to keep the pressure on Tiger," said Bryant. "But that is why he is Tiger - he has done it before and he will do it again." Singh and O'Hair finished in a share of third with Cliff Kresge - three shots off the pace - while Hunter Mahan and Ken Duke were a shot further back. Lee Westwood had a day to forget, with the Ryder Cup star seeing his outside chances of lifting the title disappear with a double bogey at the third. Westwood picked up two further bogeys - with two birdies doing little to ease his mood as he finished on two under for the tournament.
