Woods says he takes plenty of positives despite poor weekend
Tiger Woods was left to rue a disastrous start to his final round that scuppered his challenge for a 15th major title at the US Open.
The three-time champion started the day five off the lead, but any hopes of making early inroads on that deficit disappeared when he bogeyed the first two holes and then double-bogeyed the third.
Further shots went at five and six, although he managed to restore some pride with birdies at the eighth, 14th and 17th to salvage a three-over 73 which left him at seven over for the week.
Woods, who felt he was "a fraction off" with his putting during his third-day 75, said: "Today was different. I felt great on the greens.
"I had the perfect speed all day and unfortunately I just got off to such an awful start. I tried coming in, but I was too far out.
"The first six holes, I just didn't play well at all. I just could never get anything going positively and I missed the ball in the wrong side a couple times and that's all it takes.
Lot of positives
"But there's a lot of positives this week. I hit the ball really well, but unfortunately I just didn't have the speed of the greens until today.
"Overall I'm happy with the way I struck the golf ball, the way I controlled it all week is something that's very positive going forward.
"If I just would have just hung in there little bit better on Saturday and missed it on the correct side a couple times then I would have been in a better position going into the final round."
