Paul Dunne handed place at the US Amateur Championship

Paul Dunne's eye-catching performance at the 144th Open has earned him a place in the US Amateur Championship later this month.

The 22-year-old, who began the final round at St Andrews in a share of the lead, has been given special exemption by the United States Golf Association to feature from August 20th.

"Paul Dunne demonstrated his ability to compete with anyone by his outstanding play in the recent British Open at St Andrews," said Diana M Murphy, chairman of the USGA's Championship Committee.

"The USGA is pleased that he will be joining the strong international field of 312 players in the US Amateur, our oldest national championship, at Olympia Fields."

The Irishman ended in a tie for 30th after a six-over 78 during the final round, as Jordan Niebrugge claimed the Silver Medal in his final event as an amateur before turning professional. 

Dunne, who intends turning professional later this year, is set to feature for Great Britain and Ireland in the Walker Cup next month before leaving the amateur ranks.

He was named in a provisional squad of 20 for the clash at Royal Lytham and St Annes, with captain Nigel Edwards announcing his 10-man team later this month.
