Matthew Fitzpatrick cards wonderful 60 at KLM Open

Matthew Fitzpatrick fired a stunning 10-under-par 60 during a low scoring round two of the KLM Open at Zandvoort.

The 21-year old surged up the leaderboard with a birdie-filled and bogey-free round, finishing 11 shots better off than his first round display and just three behind leader Soren Kjeldsen, who carded his second 64 of the week.

Paul Lawrie, who struck a wonderful 61 for the overnight lead, endured a miserable second day with a double-bogey at seven epitomising the 46-year-old's turn in fortunes as he finished ten strokes worse off, but remains well placed heading into the weekend on eight under.

There were scores of 64 for Jason Barnes and Richard Green to continue their fine start to the tournament, while Wade Ormsby and David Horsey also impressed, ending the day one shot off the lead.

But the day undoubtedly belonged to Fitzpatrick, who narrowly missed the chance of setting a European-record 59 by sending a birdie putt wide of the cup.

"I was thinking about the 59 after the front nine to be honest," said the former US Amateur champion, who has had three top-three finishes in his last eight events.

"I was already celebrating going out in 28 actually so to give myself a shot at that magic number was great.

"Shame that putt at the end came up short but I'll take 60 any day of the week."

Zandvoort's star attraction Martin Kaymer, the highest ranked player in the field, holed a birdie at 18 to card consecutive 67s for a score of six under after the opening two rounds.

It was a much improved performance from Padraig Harrington, who struck six birdies to just one bogey to move under par heading into the weekend.
