Isaac Makwala broke down in tears after finishing sixth in the men's 200m final, on what was a devastating day for the sprinter.
Botswana's Makwala qualified on Wednesday after running in a solo time trial and the semi-final, having been controversially denied entry to the stadium on Tuesday as world governing body the IAAF tried to combat an outbreak of the norovirus.
Makwala and Botswana had been critical of his treatment and the 30-year-old said he was still running heartbroken, after not being allowed to race in the 400m.
He was never in contention on Thursday as Ramil Guliyev, a European silver medal winner, won Turkey's first ever gold medal of a World Championships to cross the line in 20.09s, closely followed by Wayde van Niekerk and Jereem Richards, each given a time of 20.11s,
