OJ Mayo has been disqualified and dismissed from the NBA for a violation of the league's anti-drug programme.

The disqualification means Mayo, 28, will miss at least the next two seasons as he is not eligible to apply for reinstatement until the summer of 2018.

Mayo had been with the Milwaukee Bucks for the last three years, but he could only average 7.8 points per game in 41 appearances last season and he was due to enter free agency.

He has been in the league since 2008 when he became the third overall selection of the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA Draft.

Mayo served a 10-game suspension for a violation of the NBA drug policy in 2011 after testing positive for a banned steroid, which he blamed on an over the counter supplement.
