A 29-point haul from Kobe Bryant was not enough to win a high-scoring clash which the Nuggets put their stamp on after half-time.
The game was tied at 60-60 at that point, but the Lakers turned the ball over far too often and the Nuggets' offensive stars were in no mood to pass up the chance with six of their players ending the game in double figures.
Guard Ty Lawson scored 21 points and weighed in with 10 assists and Danilo Gallinari hit two key three-pointers down the stretch to ensure Denver held on to the advantage they built up in the third period - he ended with 20 points.
"(We're) a good team, and it's getting better," said Nuggets coach George Karl "I just don't want to get too crazy with it."
Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook combined for 45 points as the Oklahoma City Thunder extended their fine road record with a 104-92 win in Toronto.
LeBron James scored 24 points for the Miami Heat in their easy 99-71 win over struggling Washington and Kemba Walker scored 20 for the Charlotte Bobcats who made it back-to-back wins by beating Detroit 108-101 in overtime.
Sunday's only other game saw Memphis take a 92-81 win at Phoenix with Zach Randolph scoring 21 points and Rudy Gay 20.
