Anaheim Ducks forward Shawn Horcoff has been banned for 20 games for a violation of the NHL's doping regulations.

The 37-year-old has played in 45 games for the Pacific Division team this season but has only contributed six goals and four assists.

Horcoff will forfeit a total of $357,500 (£250,000) in salary during his unpaid suspension - the NHL has not disclosed the banned substance he tested positive for.

The player confirmed he had inadvertently taken the substance during his recovery from an injury, issuing a statement to apologise.

He said: "While recovering from an injury I suffered this past autumn, I tried a treatment that I believed would help speed up the healing process.

"Although I was unaware that this treatment was not permitted under NHL rules, that is no excuse whatsoever. I should have done my research ... I accept full responsibility for my actions and I am sorry."
