White Sox win, while AL Central rivals Detroit lose

The Chicago White Sox smashed six runs in the sixth inning as they crushed the Minnesota Twins 9-2 on Sunday. The win, coupled with a defeat for the Detroit Tigers, took the Sox two games clear at the top of the American League Central division. Dayan Viciedo and Adam Dunn starred with home runs but the game was settled by Chicago blitzing six runs in the sixth. It was the Twins' 13th defeat in 16 games against the White Sox. Chicago's position was enhanced after the Tigers lost 7-6 against Cleveland. Lonnie Chisenhall singled the winning run in the ninth inning to give victory to the Indians and deal a cruel blow to the Tigers, who had manager Jim Leyland ejected. The New York Yankees remain top of the AL East after a 6-4 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. A five-run score in the third inning proved crucial for the Yankees, the highlight of which came through Russell Martin's three-run homer. The Baltimore Orioles are just a game behind New York after Matt Wieters and Endy Chavez propelled them past the Oakland Athletics 9-5. Wieters homered on two separate occasions while Chavez had four hits and two RBI to sink Oakland, who lost further ground on Texas in the AL West. The Rangers are now three games clear after edging past the Seattle Mariners 2-1, with a homer for Adrian Beltre and Michael Young's three-hit game backing up excellent work from pitcher Matt Harrison.

Smoke

Mark Trumbo thumped a three-run homer to give the Los Angeles Angels a 4-3 triumph over the Kansas City Royals, while Adeiny Hechavarria's two-run homer and two hits from Omar Vizquel helped the Toronto Blue Jays smoke the Boston Red Sox 5-0. The St Louis Cardinals regained undisputed possession of the National League wildcard spot with a 5-2, 12th-inning victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Jon Jay was the hero for the Cardinals with a go-ahead RBI double during a three-run burst in the final inning. NL East leaders the Washington Nationals suffered their third successive defeat against the Atlanta Braves, who won 5-1 to complete a clean sweep. A sensational all-round performance from Patrick Corbin ensured the Arizona Diamondbacks hammered NL West leaders San Francisco 10-2. Not content with simply pitching to great effect, Corbin also struck a treble and an RBI single. Anthony Rizzo was also in inspired form for the Chicago Cubs, homering twice and driving in six in a 13-9 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. NL Central leaders the Cincinnati Reds squeezed past the Miami Marlins 5-4 in the 11th inning, courtesy of Ryan Ludwick's go-ahead single. Rookie Yonder Alonso singled in the winning run as the San Diego Padres were 12-11 victors over the Colorado Rockies in an entertaining affair. Ryan Braun hit two home runs in the Milwaukee Brewers' 3-0 win over the New York Mets and a two-run double from Justin Maxwell and Matt Dominguez's two-run single saw the Houston Astros beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-6.
