Belfast star staying in the US after showcasing his talents in Chicago

Great Britain defenceman David Phillips will not return to the Elite League after signing for Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League (AHL). The 21-year-old had been due to play for the Belfast Giants for a second year, but impressed at an evaluation camp run by NHL outfit the Chicago Blackhawks and has subsequently been snapped up. He has committed himself to the IceHogs and East Coast Hockey League's (ECHL) Gwinnett Gladiators for two years and is keen to make the most of his opportnuity. "I'm gutted I won't be playing in Belfast next season but I'm really excited about this and it is a great opportunity," Phillips said. "I never even dreamed of getting to skate with prospects from an NHL team in front of their scouts and management and now I'll have the chance to play week in, week out with them."
