Sunday’s race in the America’s Cup World Series has been abandoned due to bad weather.

The yachts had been due to compete off the shores of Portsmouth but winds in excess of 30 miles per hour have put an end to that.

Organisers had already planned, due to the poor forecast, that they would move the start of the race forward by 90 minutes to midday.

However, due to continuing poor conditions, they were forced to abandon Sunday's events.

A statement on the America’s Cup website reads: "After discussions with the organising committee due to extreme weather we have had to take the difficult decision to cancel today's racing.

We could not risk the safety of the crews and public, and their welfare is paramount.

"We had hoped to go ahead with early racing but with winds gusting in excess of 30 mph we could not risk the safety of the crews and public, and their welfare is paramount."

Two races were scheduled with double points on offer towards qualification for the 2017 America's Cup.

On Saturday, Ben Ainslie's Land Rover BAR team built a slender lead at the top of the standings after winning the first race and coming in second in the next to sit one point above Emirates Team New Zealand.
