Andrea Iannone claimed his first MotoGP pole position after posting the fastest time in qualifying for Sunday's Italian Grand Prix at Mugello.

The Ducati rider will start from pole for the ninth time in his career, although this is his first since stepping up to the top classification at the start of the 2013 season.

Iannone has finished in the top six in all five races so far this season, albeit only on the podium once, and he performed well to claim fifth in France last time out considering he was riding with a dislocated shoulder.

He set a new pole record around the legendary circuit, posting a time of one minute, 46.489 seconds, but that was only just under a tenth of a second quicker than Jorge Lorenzo.

Spain's two-time world champion Lorenzo - bidding for a third successive win this season - beat Iannone's team-mate and compatriot Andrea Dovizioso into third.

But it was a tough day for championship leader Valentino Rossi and reigning champion Marc Marquez.

Rossi could only post the eighth fastest time while Marquez failed to make it through the first qualifying session and will start from a lowly 13th.

Britain's Sam Lowes claimed pole position in the Moto2 class, more than three-tenths of a second quicker than second placed Dominique Aegerter.

And there was also a British pole winner in Moto3 with Danny Kent beating Japan's Hiroki Ono by three-tenths.
