England slipped to a heavy 65-39 defeat against New Zealand in their opening match of the Quad Series.

Tracey Neville's team could not match the heavy-scoring of the hosts as they made a disappointing start to the four-team competition.

Earlier in the day, world champions Australia started their campaign with a dominant 68-43 win over South Africa, sending out an ominous warning ahead of Wednesday's game with England.

England quickly fell behind in the first quarter, despite a spectacular flying feed from Jade Clarke that led to a Helen Housby goal, and it was the Silver Ferns who opened a 17-9 advantage at the break.

As New Zealand pulled further ahead in the second quarter, Neville replaced goal attack Housby with Kadeen Corbin in an attempt to liven up her misfiring attack.

But the Kiwis continued to pile on the points and held a commanding 48-29 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
