Head coach Adam Gase says retired quarterback Jay Cutler is potentially interested in joining the Miami Dolphins.

The Dolphins are looking into replacements for Ryan Tannehill while their No 1's status remains in question because of a knee injury.

Tannehill was hurt during practice in the week and there are questions whether he will be able to play at all during the 2017-18 season, with surgery a possibility.

Cutler called time on his career with the Chicago Bears at the end of last season and he was set to join the commentary ranks full-time with Fox Sports until the call came from Miami.

"He was interested," Gase said of a brief conversation with the 34-year-old Cutler.

"I think he's trying to figure out everything. I mean, you don't expect this to happen. I don't think he looked at our situation. He was surprised and he has things to work through.

"We're keeping all our options on the table. A lot of the things that are out there aren't really what we're doing. It's kind of funny to watch."

Should Tannehill be sidelined, Matt Moore would step into the starting role barring any signings from outside of the organisation.
