Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith had earlier thrown two touchdown passes in the first nine minutes of the contest, with Kansas City capitalising on two Philip Rivers interceptions.

Rivers would throw a third pick in the second quarter, though this time the Chiefs would only add a 34-yard Cairo Santos field goal off the turnover.

Given Rivers' struggles, the Chargers did well to trail only 17-10 at half-time - Melvin Gordon scored on an 11-yard run in the first quarter and rookie kicker Younghoe Koo nailed a 29-yard field goal as time expired before the break.

But, defences dominated in a scoreless second half, until Hunt broke free in the final two minutes, scoring his fifth touchdown in his fledgling NFL career.

It confirmed a seventh win in a row for the Chiefs (3-0) over the Chargers (0-3) and earned them a 12th straight win in AFC West divisional games.
