Adam Gase has left his role as offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears to become head coach of the Miami Dolphins.

Gase was linked with a number of NFL coaching vacancies, but chose Miami after also speaking with the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants.

The 37-year-old, who becomes the youngest head coach in the league, vastly improved the Bears' rushing attack in his single season at Soldier Field, which came after an impressive spell in a similar role with the Denver Broncos.

"We did exhaustive research on all of the candidates ahead of time and conducted thorough and detailed interviews with each person," Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said.

"In the end, I was convinced and the search committee was unanimous Adam was the right leader for our football team who best met all of our priorities. He has high-energy is competitive and driven to win with a mindset of teaching and developing players."

Gase will be charged with improving a Dolphins team that finished bottom of the AFC East this season with a 6-10 record.

They fired coach Joe Philbin after losing three of their first four games, the final straw coming with a defeat against the New York Jets in the first International Series game at Wembley Stadium.

Joe Campbell took over from Philbin for the remainder of the season and won his first two games in charge, but they lost four of their last six matches and, although he was interviewed for the permanent role, the Dolphins decided to opt for an external candidate.
