Second-year running back Karlos Williams of the Buffalo Bills has been suspended for the first four games of the regular season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

The league informed the team on Friday that Williams will be eligible to return to the Bills' active roster on October 3, the day after the Bills play at New England.

He will be allowed to participate in training camp and pre-season games. The suspension will begin the Monday of Week 1 of the regular season.

Williams had a solid first season after the Bills made him a fifth-round draft pick in 2015 out of Florida State. He tied for the team lead in touchdowns with nine.

The news comes a day after Bills running back Jonathan Williams was arrested in Arkansas on a misdemeanour charge of driving while intoxicated.

He was a fifth-round pick this year for the Bills after sitting out his senior season at Arkansas with a torn foot ligament.
