San Diego Chargers running back Danny Woodhead has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Woodhead was hurt in the Chargers' 38-14 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday and he has already been placed on injured reserve.

The season-ending injury is the second suffered by San Diego in their first two games with star wide receiver Keenan Allen sustaining the same injury against Kansas City in week one.

Woodhead, 31, is one of the best pass catching backs in the NFL, having made 80 receptions last season for 755 yards and six touchdowns, all figures unmatched by San Diego's receiving corps.

He and Melvin Gordon had provided the Chargers with an excellent 1-2 punch on offence so far this season, combining for 275 rushing yards on 57 carries.

To fill out their roster, the Chargers have signed wide receiver Griff Whalen, who spent last season with the Indianapolis Colts and training camp with the Miami Dolphins before being released.
