Brandon Marshall will follow Darrelle Revis and Nick Mangold out of the MetLife exit door as the New York Jets rebuild gathers pace.

Revis' departure was revealed earlier this week, hot on the heels of veteran centre Mangold's exit, and wide-receiver Marshall will also join the list when free agency begins on March 9.

A person with direct knowledge of the team's decision told the Associated Press on Thursday night that the Jets are releasing Marshall in a move that will clear $7.5m on the salary cap, and confirmation is expected to come on Friday.

Marshall is the latest star to be cut by the Jets, who have also parted ways Nick Folk and Breno Giacomini this off-season and alongside the trio of high-profile exits, the Jets have cleared nearly $46m in cap space as they head to free agency and the Draft with designs on a rebuild.

After a 10-6 season in 2015 that saw them miss out on the play-offs in the final game of the season, the Jets followed up with a dismal 2016 that saw them record just five wins and finish bottom of the AFC North.

Marshall is reported to have been asked to be released and he will have designs on a move to a play-off contender, having never been to the post-season in his 11 NFL seasons.

Marshall, who turns 33 later this month, played two seasons for the Jets, and set franchise records with 109 catches and 1,502 yards receiving in 2015 while being voted the team's MVP by his team-mates.

His production dropped dramatically last season, though, as he had just 59 receptions for 788 yards and three TDs while dealing with a few injuries and inconsistent quarterback play.
