Chicago Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan has been suspended for two games following a helmet-to-helmet hit on Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams.

Adams suffered a concussion and needed hospital treatment after Trevathan smashed into his facemask in a collision during the Bears' 35-14 defeat at Lambeau Field on Thursday.

Bears coach John Fox later insisted there was no malicious intent in the tackle and that Trevathan was "not a dirty player".

The Bears were given a 15-yard penalty after the hit but Trevathan escaped being ejected from the game.

However, the NFL's vice president of football operations Jon Runyan said in a statement on Saturday Trevathan would be suspended for two games for "violation of safety-related playing rules".

Trevathan will be eligible to return following Chicago's October 15 game against Baltimore.

Adams was released from hospital on Friday, later updating his status on Twitter. "At home feeling great. Appreciate the prayers," he wrote.

Trevathan also insisted he had not set out to hurt Adams.

"I was just trying to make a play. It wasn't intentional," he said. "I was just trying to do my job and he ended up getting hurt. I'm sorry about that and I'm going to reach out to him."

Trevathan's suspension comes after the league vowed to crack down on illegal shots to the head before the season kicked off.

The NFL has faced growing scrutiny in recent years over the issue of concussions and head trauma, with the league in 2015 agreeing a $1 billion settlement to resolve thousands of lawsuits by former players suffering from neurological problems.
