Team GB secured bronze in the women's 4x400m relay to move to a total of 66 medals and surpass their London 2012 tally.
Christine Ohuruogu anchored the team to third place in the penultimate event of the track and field competition and in doing so also ensured Great Britain's athletics team reached their UK Sport target of seven medals.
Fine support from Eilidh Doyle, Anyika Onuora and Emily Diamond left Ohuruogu in third with 400m remaining, although a number of challengers were close behind.
Ohuruogu looked in danger for a while but she kicked again in the final 100m and had a handy gap by the line as Britain claimed their final medal of the day behind the United States and Jamaica.
"Today it wasn't really about me," Ohuruogu said after adding to her individual 400m gold from Beijing 2008 and silver four years ago. "I just really wanted a real team effort today.
"After yesterday, we knew a medal was up for grabs but it's all well and good saying it, but we actually had to come out and deliver.
"We knew that we would need a strong performance from all the girls and they set me up in a good position. I just rolled with what they gave me. They did all the hard work, really."
Team GB are guaranteed to reach 67 medals as boxer Joe Joyce faces France's Tony Yoka in Sunday's super heavyweight final.
UK Sport chief executive Liz Nicholl said: "Our athletes have prepared and performed quite exceptionally in Rio, to deliver arguably the greatest achievement in British sporting history.
"Their dedication, skill and ability to perform on the biggest stage has delivered historic results, and I hope the nation feels proud of and united by their team.
"Our high performance system is the envy of the world, thanks to sustained investment by our government and the National Lottery, and has now delivered something unprecedented."
Sports minister Tracey Crouch said: "Team GB's now record-breaking medal haul in Rio is an incredible achievement and our athletes have made the country incredibly proud."
