Wakefield have given star forward David Fifita extended leave for personal reasons.

Fifita, 28, whose twin brother Andrew is playing for Tonga in the World Cup quarter-finals, has been told he can stay in Australia until after Christmas during what the club says is "a worrying time" for him.

Prop Fifita has turned into a big fans' favourite at Trinity since signing from Cronulla Sharks a year ago, due to his physical dominance in the middle of the park.

Wakefield chairman Michael Carter said: "Having spoken with David and (head coach) Chris Chester, we have decided to allow David to remain in Australia until Christmas to provide the support his family needs.

"David will continue his pre-season in Australia and will return to the UK between Christmas and New Year to prepare for a big season coming up in 2018."
