Jamie Ellis' last-minute drop goal put Castleford within a point of second-placed Wigan

Injury-ravaged Castleford clinched a stunning last-gasp 19-18 victory over Super League high-flyers Wigan thanks to the boot of Jamie Ellis.

Tigers trailed 12-4 at the break but hauled themselves back into the game and took charge of the contest only to let the lead slip themselves in the closing stages after Matt Cook was sin-binned.

But a 79th minute drop goal from Ellis propelled the hosts to victory and took Tigers up to third in the table and to within a point of second-placed Warriors.

Wigan, who were also depleted by injuries as well as England call-ups, have now lost four of their last five Super League games.

Game of the weekend

England and New Zealand went head-to-head at the Mile High Stadium in Denver, Colorado in a one-off Test to help raise the profile of the sport in a country that will host the 2025 Rugby League World Cup.

It was England's first game since their defeat to Australia in the 2017 World Cup final and they battled back from 12-0 down to eventually claim an impressive 36-18 victory.

Wayne Bennett's men looked way off the pace in energy-sapping conditions in the opening quarter but finished the game in total control.

Second rower Elliott Whitehead scored two of his side's six tries while outside backs Jake Connor and Tommy Makinson also got on the scoresheet on debut as the new-look Kiwis were played off the park in the second half.

Stalwarts James Graham, on his record-extending 40th appearance, James Roby, Gareth Widdop and Sam Burgess all came to the fore but it was the introduction of the four substitutes from the bench that turned the game on its head.

Try of the weekend

Wigan may have ended up on the wrong side of the result against Castleford but they did produce one of the tries of the season courtesy of Liam Marshall's long-range stunner.

Marshall collected the ball deep inside his own half before dancing past four Cas defenders and accelerating upfield where he bamboozled last man Quentin Laulu-Togaga'e on his way to the try line.

'Baby Blues' claim bragging rights Down Under

New South Wales settled this year's State of Origin series with an 18-14 victory over Queensland in Sydney.

Queensland, under pressure to keep the series alive after their 22-12 defeat in the opener last month, started the game much the stronger side and raced into a 10-0 lead inside 20 minutes after tries from Valentine Holmes and Dane Gagai.

But a brilliant solo finish from NSW wing Josh Addo-Carr brought the Blues back into the contest and a rare penalty try - the first in the contest since 1981 - after Boyd Cordner was pulled back by Ben Hunt helped them into a 12-10 lead at the break.

NSW moved further ahead with a score from Latrell Mitchell and despite a try from Queensland's Will Chambers and the sin-binning of James Roberts they were able to notch their first series success in four years.

Performance of the round

Wakefield ran in an incredible eight tries in a 44-22 victory over Widnes to close in on a place in the Super 8s.

Tom Johnstone, Bill Tupou (twice), Ben Jones-Bishop, James Batchelor, Tinirau Arona and Reece Lyne (twice) all crossed in the sunshine at the Mobile Rocket Stadium.

With five games to go in the regular season, Wakefield could book a Super 8s place should they beat Catalans at home in two weeks' time, while Widnes look certain now to play in The Qualifiers.
