Wigan skipper Sean O'Loughlin will miss England's World Cup campaign after failing to recover from a shoulder injury.
The loose forward, 25, broke his shoulder blade in May and, following an abortive comeback six weeks ago, scans have revealed the bone has yet to fully heal.
"This is a serious blow for us and for the player," said Wigan coach Brian Noble, who had hoped to have his captain back for the Super League play-offs.
"It's a shame for the lad but clearly he now needs to rest it for at least four weeks before he can start training again.
"He will not be ready for the World Cup which is another blow for England and for him.
"However, it is important not to take any risks and to have him fully fit for the start of the new season."
O'Loughlin played in all three of Great Britain's Tests against New Zealand last year but missed England's mid-season international against France because of his injury.
He is the second player to be ruled out of England coach Tony Smith's World Cup plans following the decision of Bradford forward Sam Burgess to undergo shoulder surgery.
The World Cup takes place in Australia from October 25-November 22.
