Rugby League Set of Six: Hull's double dream and Kurt Gidley's boot

Hull FC's Danny Houghton celebrates his try against Catalans.

Hull FC's double dream, another Burgess at Souths and Kurt Gidley's boot all feature in this week's Set of Six.

Hull's dream start

Hull's quest for silverware and their dream start to the 2016 continued as they booked a Challenge Cup semi-final date with Wigan Warriors.

Lee Radford's side powered past the Catalans Dragons 22-8 thanks to tries from Steve Michaels, Frank Pritchard and Danny Houghton, moving one step closer to their first major trophy in 11 years.

Since their 46-6 humiliation at the hands of Widnes in March, the Black and Whites have recorded 15 wins in 16 matches, the match against Catalans marking their 10th successive victory.

Their Super League campaign is also going from strength to strength as they currently sit two points ahead of Wigan in the table as the start of the Super 8s draws ever closer.

Broncos beaten at home

London Broncos have taken to their new home in Ealing like a duck to water but their hopes of a 10th successive home league win were emphatically ended by Championship leaders Leigh on Sunday.

Cory Paterson and Greg Worthington scored two tries each the Centurions ran out convincing 38-12 winners in their top-of-the-table clash in west London.

Josh Drinkwater, Liam Kay and Adam Higson also touched down for the victorious Centurions while Lee Smith kicked five goals at Trailfinders Sports Club.

The Broncos, who trailed 28-0 at half-time, replied through Mark Ioane and Apirana Pewhairangi but the Centurions were too strong and moved five points clear at the top.

Five points clear with four games remaining, Leigh look certain to finish top of the Championship but the Broncos are well-placed to join them in the Qualifiers.

A trip to London used to be a routine two points for Super League sides but whoever finishes in the bottom four this season could be in for an uncomfortable afternoon at Trailfinders.

Another Burgess, same result

Joe Burgess of South Sydney Rabbitohs

Another Burgess joined South Sydney Rabbitohs last week but it failed to spark an upturn in fortunes as the Bunnies slipped to their fourth successive defeat.

Joe Burgess, no relation to Sam, Tom or George, has moved across Sydney from the Roosters for the remainder of the current campaign. The England winger will return to Wigan for the 2017 season.

Burgess went straight into the Rabbitohs line-up for their clash with Penrith and played the full 80 minutes at Pepper Stadium, making 80 metres from 10 carries.

Souths dominated possession and scored an early try through Kyle Turner but their defensive frailties were again exposed as Penrith hit back with two tries to lead at the interval, and three unanswered touchdowns after the interval put the Panthers on course to victory.

Sam Burgess crossed twice in the closing stages but it was scant consolation for a side that were tipped as Grand Final contenders at the start of the season.

The Rabbitohs sit 12th in the NRL table after losing 10 of their 15 fixtures and their hopes of finals football are hanging by a thread. Sam Burgess' big-money return has not gone to plan and after struggling for game time at the Roosters, Joe could also find the going tough.

Keighley donate match fees

Keighley Cougar's hopes of League one promotion suffered a hammer blow as they crashed to a humiliating 84-6 defeat at the hands of Toulouse.

The French outfit ran 15 tries past Keighley, prompting head coach Paul March to apologise and his players to pledge their match fees to fund another away trip to the faithful fans who made the trip across the channel.

The writing was on the wall for Cougars after they trailed their hosts by 24 points with only a quarter of the game played and the game continued to go from bad to worse.

Toulouse ran in a further nine tries in the second half to fall just 10 points short of inflicting Cougars' heaviest recorded defeat. Keighley had only Matthew Bailey's score before the break to show for their journey.

Gidley's boot strikes again

Warrington's Kurt Gidley's kick for goal edges his team ahead.

Kurt Gidley kicked a late penalty for the second week in a row to earn his side a 20-18 victory as Warrington edged out local rivals Widnes to reach the last four of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup .

A week after his goal earned the Wolves two precious Super League points at the expense of Catalans Dragons, the Australian kept his nerve to help his side close out a tense quarter-final at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Widnes led 12-10 at the break through converted tries from Joe Mellor and Matt Whitley, with Jack Hughes and Kevin Penny scoring for the hosts.

After the break, Brad Dwyer crossed to put Warrington back ahead but Charly Runciman levelled the scores at 18-18 before Gidley's late penalty settled the tie.
