Salford owner Marwan Koukash has appeared in person at a tribunal to present the case for the restoration of the points the club lost for allegedly breaking the salary cap.

The tribunal in Manchester ended on Wednesday but no verdict is expected to be delivered until Thursday.

The Red Devils were deducted six competition points and fined £5,000 on April 25 after being found guilty by a Rugby Football League independent tribunal of breaching the Super League's £1.82m salary cap in 2014.

Koukash immediately signalled his intention to appeal and the RFL agreed to his request to take it to the independent body Sport Resolutions (UK).

The outcome of the appeal could have crucial bearing on the make-up of the top eight, with just three rounds left after the hearing before the split for the Super 8s.

The penalty dropped Salford into the bottom four, leaving them facing a second successive battle for survival through the Qualifiers, but a restoration of the six points, based on current positions, would take them into sixth spot and put Castleford into the bottom four.
