Salford owner Marwan Koukash says the club will appeal a six-point penalty for breaching Super League's salary cap.

The sanction was imposed on Monday night by an independent tribunal which said Salford had broken the rules in contractual agreements with three players in 2014 and 2015.

A fine of £5,000 was also handed down, while the Red Devils were found not guilty of rule breaches over two other contracts.

In the immediate aftermath of the verdict, Koukash said he would appeal only if the Rugby Football League "demonstrates to the club and to the sport that the proceedings will be independent".

But a message posted on his Twitter page on Tuesday said: "I owe it to the current squad and to our fans to fight the decision made by the RFL tribunal. The club will appeal."
