Magic moments from the career of Leeds Rhinos legend Danny McGuire

Leeds captain Danny McGuire

Sport sometimes produces once-in-a-generation players, and in Super League, Danny McGuire is certainly one of those.

He is the leading all-time try scorer in Rugby League's summer era, crossing 233 times to date, and has scored 262 tries in his Leeds career overall - fourth in their all-time list.

McGuire will leave the club at the end of the season but he has not announced his retirement, so could we see the half-back pulling on the colours of a different team in 2018?

Here are some of his best moments in a Leeds shirt...

St Helens stunned - 2003

McGuire made his Leeds debut in 2001 and flitted in and out of the side for a couple of years. But he sprung to life in 2003 under Daryl Powell, and it was the Challenge Cup semi-final against St Helens where he really caught the eye.

As a teenage substitute, McGuire changed the game. His side were 26-20 down with two minutes to go when McGuire nipped through the Saints defence to score out wide in the corner.

Kevin Sinfield nailed the conversion from the touchline to send the game to extra-time - and once again it was McGuire who came up with the magic moment to steal victory.

Supporting Sinfield's break, the youngster raced through the gap and outpaced the covering defence to score in the corner. It sealed a 33-26 win and a return to the Challenge Cup final.

Powell left the hero McGuire out of his side to face Bradford, and Leeds were beaten in a nail-biter in Cardiff.

Five tries v Widnes - 2004

Spurred on by that 2003 final snub, McGuire began the 2004 season as a starting member of the Rhinos side under Tony Smith, dislodging Andrew Dunemann from the 13. He played a key role as Leeds blew away the rest of Super League, losing just twice on their way to topping the regular table.

The highlight of McGuire's season so far was a five-try salvo against Widnes in a 48-24 win at Headingley in June. It matched the Super League record at the time, although Lesley Vainikolo would go on to break it a year later against Hull FC.

McGuire did get close again, matching his 2004 effort by crossing five times against the Bradford Bulls in 2012.

For all Leeds' razzle and dazzle during the regular season, the pressure was on during the play-offs. They lost to Bradford in the qualification semi-final, before shrugging off the nerves to swat Wigan aside at Headingley in the elimination final. So local rivals Bradford lay in wait at Old Trafford.

In a nip-and-tuck game, Leeds led just 10-8 with seven minutes to go. However, Robbie Paul dropped the ball 20 yards out.

From the resulting set, McGuire took the ball up from dummy-half, feeding Keith Senior who in return shipped an offload back to McGuire, with the half-back darting over from close range for his 39th try of the season to end 32 years of hurt for Leeds.

McGuire scores his second try against Saints

McGuire and Leeds picked up their second Super League winners rings in 2007, but they were aiming to win back-to-back titles.

St Helens were again the Old Trafford opponents in 2008, in dismal weather in Manchester. The sides were level early in the second half, when McGuire worked his magic again. First he collected a Kevin Sinfield kick to dot down under the posts. And despite Ade Gardner crossing for St Helens, McGuire would score the match-clinching try as well.

Francis Meli spilled Sinfield's high bomb and McGuire saw off one tackle before side stepping through to slide over and seal the game with that double try-scoring effort. A third title in a row followed in 2009.

Super League history - 2012

As mentioned before, McGuire is Super League's record try scorer with 233 tries. But the special record-breaking moment came back in 2012. For most, a 42-20 regular season win over Wakefield wouldn't live too long in the memory.

But for McGuire, it's a game he'll remember forever. He went past former teammate Keith Senior's previous Super League record of 199 tries after half time. And number 200 came in traditional fashion.

McGuire was supporting a break, fittingly made by long term half-back partner Rob Burrow. And he touched down for the double century, setting the bar for Super League players to aim at.

Cup success…at last! - 2014

For Leeds' golden generation, the Challenge Cup was the only thing missing from their collection. After losing several finals, they came up against West Yorkshire rivals Castleford at Wembley in 2014.

Plenty was made pre-match about the pressure facing heavy favourites Leeds, but the Rhinos finally delivered on the cup scene. And McGuire played a massive part, scoring his first Challenge Cup final try in the process.

He outjumped Luke Dorn in the London sun to touch down before dropping a late goal to send the Leeds fans into pandemonium around the ground. The set of medals was complete.

Harry Sunderland AND treble winner - 2015

Despite all the winners' medals, McGuire had never won an individual accolade in any of Leeds' final appearances. But his performance in the 2015 Grand Final was one of his best.

With all the fanfare surrounding the departing Kevin Sinfield and the retiring Jamie Peacock and Kylie Leuluai, the pressure was on Leeds to deliver a seventh Old Trafford trophy. And McGuire stepped up on the big occasion.

He crossed first from Sinfield's kick, collecting before diving over. And his second came in classic McGuire fashion, supporting Kallum Watkins' break before taking the inside pass to dive over. And in the second half, McGuire helped produce the match-winning moment.

He kicked high for Ryan Hall to palm back and the ball eventually ended up in the arms of Josh Walters who flew over. Treble secured. Send off complete. And McGuire awarded the Harry Sunderland Trophy as man of the match for his try-scoring accolades and organisational skills.

Captain Fantastic - 2016

Kevin Sinfield's presence in Leeds' all-conquering side ensured there was no need to ever have a debate over the captaincy. But his retirement left a void in the Rhinos side and in the off-season of 2016, McGuire became the man to step into those massive shoes.

But who better to fill them than the lifelong Leeds player, a man who's spent his entire career with the Rhinos. And although 2016 was a difficult season for the Rhinos, McGuire and his side currently sit second in the Super League table.

Will McGuire secure a send-off of his own come the end of the season?
