England gave a decent account of themselves in Saturday's 28-20 defeat to Australia in Cardiff, but handling errors and penalties ultimately proved costly.
Steve McNamara's troops made a flying start thanks to tries from Ryan Hall and Leroy Cudjoe, however, their defence was unable to withstand the Kangaroos' attack once they came knocking.
Tim Sheens' side kept Tomkins relatively quiet throughout and the 24-year-old, who is joining the New Zealand Warriors next season, believes they will need to protect the ball better against Ireland.
Scope for improvement
"It's disappointing," said the full-back. "We've a lot to improve on that's the main thing to come out of it.
"You can't be happy with a loss, can you? You've got to be disappointed with a loss.
"We probably gave them a bit too much ball. They're a quality side, probably the best in the world, and they're going to punish you."
