Warrington Wolves v Wakefield Wildcats: 2016 Super League battles

Ben Currie scores Warrington's first try against Wakefield

Ahead of their Challenge Cup clash on Saturday, we look back on the two 2016 Super League meetings between Wakefield and Warrington.

Warrington 34-16 Wakefield (26 February 2016)

Warrington ran in half a dozen tries to go top of the Super League table with a 34-16 victory over Wakefield at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in February.

Visiting boss Brian Smith never looked like celebrating a victory over his younger brother and opposition coach Tony, despite a plucky Friday night show.

The Wolves, following earlier wins over Leeds and Hull KR, led 24-6 at the break and had a star man in Kurt Gidley before he was forced off through injury in the second half.

The former Australia Test international scored his first try for Warrington as well as creating another two and kicking five goals from six attempts.

Ben Currie and Chris Sandow each crossed twice for the Wolves with their other try coming through Kevin Penny, but it was far from a five-star display from the hosts who threw away several other scoring opportunities.

A try apiece from Wakefield's Craig Hall, Anthony Tupou and Jonny Molloy - as Liam Finn added the extras - proved insufficient.

The Wildcats looked to be in total control when they led 30-6 three minutes into the second half, but the Wolves struck back with four tries in 21 minutes, and Wakefield needed a late score from winger Ben Jones-Bishop to seal the victory.

The home side had three players sin-binned in a pulsating second half but demonstrated the resolve and tenacity that has become their hallmark under Chris Chester to claim a big scalp.

A fiery affair between Wakefield and Warrington saw three players leave the field after receiving yellow cards

Warrington were forced to field a makeshift half-back pairing after Stefan Ratchford pulled out with illness, but two-try Joe Westerman filled in superbly and young half-back Morgan Smith caught the eye with an impressive cameo on his Super League debut.
