Top-seeded David Ferrer routed fellow Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-1 6-1 in the Vienna Open to reach his 12th quarter-final of the season.

Ferrer saved two break points early in the opening set but then dominated the second-round match as he converted five of eight chances on Garcia-Lopez's serve to wrap up the victory in only 63 minutes.

The 33-year-old, who began the week in eighth place on the ATP's Race standings, needs to retain that position to book his place at the season-ending tournament in London.

Ferrer enjoys a healthy points lead over ninth-placed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, but needs to maintain his form if he wants to secure a seventh appearance in the ATP's blue riband tournament.

Meanwhile, Steve Johnson of the United States defeated Jerzy Janowicz of Poland 6-4 6-7 (7-9) 6-4 to reach his third quarter-final of the year and first since reaching the semi-finals in Winston-Salem in August.
