Johanna Konta suffered an early exit at the French Open in Paris where she was beaten 6-2 6-3 by Germany's Julia Goerges.

The British No 1, seeded 20 at Roland Garros, was handed a tough opening match against Goerges, who has been ranked as high as 15th in the world.

And so it proved as Goerges dominated almost the entire match, being helped by a series of unforced errors from Konta on Court 20.

"I try to always do a really good job of leaving my work on the court. No one died. I'm healthy. Coming off court and seeing some players who are not feeling as healthy, I feel very grateful for that," Konta said.

"I am a bit disappointed that I couldn't get a hold into that match; however, I'm also very excited and motivated to keep improving. I'm not going to beat myself up too much. I think it's always important to be kind to yourself."

There was also disappointment for Laura Robson, who was similarly demolished by a German opponent.

Robson, who came into the tournament as the lowest-ranked player in the draw after a series of injuries, fell 6-2 6-2 to 28th seed Andrea Petkovic.

The 22-year-old needed a decent tournament to try and rise back up the rankings after long-term wrist trouble, but like Konta the draw was not kind to her.

She consistently handed Petkovic points, piling up 37 unforced errors in only 16 games, and now has to try and get her form back in time for the forthcoming grasscourt season.

"It's hard to be positive right now. I feel like I had a lot of chances. There were a lot of games that went to deuce, and it was also my brain switching off at deuce every time, which sucks really. No other way of putting it," Robson said.

"I don't want to be ranked 300 for very much longer. [I have] top 100 as a goal, then see where I go after that."
