Defending champion Yvonne Meusburger narrowly avoided a first round loss at the Nurnburger Gastein Ladies tournament in Austria.
The home favourite trailed Tereza Smitkova 5-3 in the deciding set but then won four straight games in a 7-6 (11/9) 4-6 7-5 victory that took two hours and 50 minutes.
It was tough on 19-year-old Czech Smitkova, who had a surprise run to the fourth round of Wimbledon as a qualifier and also had to qualify in Bad Gastein.
It was generally a good day for the big names, with second seed Sara Errani, third seed Carla Suarez Navarro and fourth seed Andrea Petkovic all progressing.
Fifth seed Elina Svitolina knocked out home hope Patricia Mayr-Achleitner 6-1 6-4 while seventh seed Camila Giorgi was a 6-2 6-3 winner over Andrea Hlavackova, the runner-up 12 months ago.
Three young Americans made it through round one - Grace Min, Irina Falconi and Shelby Rogers - as did Dinah Pfizenmaier, Ana Bogdan, Chanelle Scheepers and Paula Ormaechea.
